Life Advice Directly from Tyrion Lannister

George R.R. Martin created one of the most epic characters when he wrote the words and life of Tyrion Lannister. The HBO show, Game of Thrones, also did an amazing job of portraying the infamous witty imp.

In A Game of Thrones, the first novel in A Song of Ice and Fire, Tyrion Lannister gives some honest advice to Jon Snow. (Tyrion also speaks similar words to Jon Snow in the first season of the TV show.)

Here is a photo of the quote from the first book (please forgive my poor underlining skills):

“Never forget what you are, for surely the world will not. Make it your strength. Then it can never be your weakness. Armor yourself in it, and it will never be used to hurt you.”

(Disclaimer – obviously I do not own these words and I’m just a fan of the books and TV show. I’m not trying to steal anything, only trying to spread the wisdom.)

I have made mistakes in my past and have a laid back personality that clashes with much of society today. The above quote helps me remember two very important lessons:

1 – Own the mistakes of the past.

We’ve all screwed up. We’ve all done and said things we aren’t proud of. But Tyrion reminds us to own up to the past and keep moving forward in life.

Don’t run from mistakes and don’t try to forget, because those who want to bring us down will bring up the messy past over and over again. Instead, embrace the mistakes. Embrace the fact that we are human and we all screw up.

2 – Be yourself. Even if you know that others will openly disapprove.

Tyrion is a dwarf, he loves to visit brothels all over Westeros, and he drinks himself to sleep every night. All three of these characteristics bring shame to his rich, uptight father. Tyrion knows the realm speaks ill of him wherever he goes. He knows that all the good he does for the kingdom will be endlessly overpowered by the fact that he’s not his father’s favorite son. But Tyrion owns it. He knows who he is and enjoys life. He walks around confidently in the knowledge of how others see him.

Tyrion deserves immense respect. How many of the others in the story try too hard to appear to be people they are not? How many of us in reality try too often to appear to be people we are not? How many try to hide truths of their personalities because it will taint the image they’ve created?

Tyrion Lannister says screw all of that. He says, “Yeah, I’m a screw up. I’m an imp. I love to drink and pay women to sleep with me. I’m not a knight like my brother or royalty like my sister. And I don’t care.”

We should all strive to be like Tyrion. We should all embrace who we are and stop trying to paint a perfect picture of who we feel we should be.

Thanks for reading this post. Tyrion Lannister is a true role model. He might have issues and never make his father proud – but who doesn’t have issues and fail to live up to expectations? Tyrion is who he is and he owns it.

Thank you, George R.R. Martin for creating an awesome character deserving of respect and admiration.

I hope you have a great day. Be yourself and own it. Own who you are.
