If Life Were Like The Walking Dead Comics

The Walking Dead Comics are gruesome and often intense. The zombie apocalypse is something many of us have thought about due to movies, TV, and comics like these. Hopefully this end of the world scenario won’t be coming to light in our lifetimes.

Reading through the comics got me thinking about living the life of the characters and how much it would truly suck. It made me think of how lucky we are to have many of the luxuries we have right now.

So here’s what life would be like if it were like the Walking Dead Comics:

1 – Cell phone towers would all be town and there would be no one to regulate cell service. So get used to having zero contact beyond face to face interactions.

In the comics, there’s occasional radio communication, but that’s brief and rare. No one knows anyone else’s status until meeting up again – or in some cases, no one ever finds out what happens to certain people.

Be grateful for the methods of communication that are functional today. We are lucky. We have the benefit of being able to check on our friends and family as many times a day as we’d like.

Think about how amazing that phone in your hand really is.

2 – Running water and hot water would, for the most part, not exist.

You know that hot shower you took this morning? Probably not. You probably didn’t think twice about it. Brushing your teeth and washing your hands – kiss that goodbye when life turns to the Walking Dead. A flushing toilet? Nope. None of that.

Seriously, running water and clean water is a luxury that some people don’t even have in our world today. Be grateful for water. Be glad we don’t live in times where we have to walk to well with a bucket, heat it over a fire, and pour it into a tub – over and over until there’s enough to take a bath. Or that we take a drink of impure water not knowing if we’ll develop a disease from it.

Drink water, take a shower, flush the toilet, and be thankful.

3 – Loved ones would die all the time.

Nearly every other page of The Walking Dead is covered with death of characters. How would you feel if you literally lost a friend or family member a couple times each month?

When the zombies take over, be prepared to lose people you love all the time. And until then, tell those you love how you feel. Make sure your most special people know how awesome they are.

Be grateful for the life you’ve been given and for the life those close to you are living as well.

4 – Food will be scarce and people will have to grow self-sufficient.

The subject of food is a constant topic in the comics. Where will we scavenge for food today? Are we running low? How many days until we run out of food?

Rick, the main character, establishes the need for hunting and gardening early on in the comics. He’s a smart guy.

Going to the grocery store and grabbing food in bulk, going through a fast food line, or eating out at a restaurant – all of this will no longer exist in the zombie world. These are all things that we take for granted now.

Enjoy that grocery store and fast food. It’s easy and it’s a lot less work than farming and hunting.

(On a side note, I actually wish we’d get back to farming more. I wish people could learn to be more self-sufficient and less reliant on the ease of modern times. But that’s another blog post. For now, I am just grateful for the ease of getting food from a convenient store.)

Thanks for reading this post and I recommend reading The Walking Dead Comics. They really made me think about how lucky we are to live in a time before the end of the world. And they are a lot of fun.

Have a great day and remember to aim for the head. 😉
